Exploring the devastating aftermath of the 2019 Australian bushfires
A War With Fire
This photo series documents the aftermath of the 2019-2020 Australian bushfires. The destruction was utterly devastating and it was heart-breaking seeing burnt houses, vehicles, and businesses. The remains of people’s livelihoods were just ashes under your feet. My role during this project was to ensure that history was visually recorded respectfully to the victims of the fires.
I have spoken to many volunteers following the documenting of these post events and all agree that there was a severe lack of funding and many voices went unheard in regards to the high possibility of oncoming devastation in that year’s fire season.
They were right.
I intend to do a follow-up photo series in the same locations to see what growth and changes have occurred since I had visited in February 2020. This photo series was also inspired by the amazing and strong unit of the SES (State Emergency Services) of which I had co-produced and directed a short documentary on 6 months prior to the bushfires.
